Course description and aims

This course focuses on a future society from the perspective of leader.  For the last 10 years, Japanese society has been experiencing decreasing population and labor force which are serious economic issues. In this course, we will read many cases about business leaders, social entrepreneurs, politicians who are tackling the issues. The aim of this course is to learn practical skills such as effective communication or listening to minorities' voices which are essential for leaders. Also we will learn what technology can contribute to build better future.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to: 1) Listening to team members' voice with diversified background. 2)Communication skills which enables to share goals and risks. 3) Understand social issues. 4) Integrate their science knowledge to social issues.

The instructor of this course has 20+year experience of journalist covering corporate executive and young leaders. Based on the experience, I deliver the practical knowledge about good and bad leadership.

Class flow

Before the beginning of each class, students submit pre-assignment (1000 words report). At the beginning of each class, the instructor share the good reports. Then the instructor talk about each class. In the end of each class, the instructor explain about the next pre-assignment. This course encourage to attend international students. Instructor speaks in Japanese but the students can speak both in Japanese and English. A part of reading materials can be access by English.

Class 6 Leadership with gender lens Reading leaders' declarations of G20 , G7 related with gender equality.
Class 7 Leadership for sustainable community development and SDGs Sustainable community development and the role of leaders.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Students knowledge and analytical skill are assessed by: Pre-assignment(35%=each 5 %)、Contribution to the class(30%), Final report(35%)
