Course description and aims

This course focuses on thinking about future society from the perspective of corporations and working style. Traditional stakeholders of corporations are shareholders, customers and employees. In the last decades, definition of stakeholders has been expanding to communities and whole supply chains. Thus, if a global company seek to be respected, it has to create values with long term perspectives. Also, thanks to spreading usage of internet, people are able to work not only at office but also from home or any other places. That created possibilities for nontraditional workers to join labor forces. 　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　In this course, we study about the recent history of corporate social responsibilities and change of working styles. Then we consider what we can do for building better future business community as a business people with scientific background.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:1) Understand the existence of many stakeholders which surround corporations. 2) Understand the change of circumstances of corporations after globalizations and spreading internet. 3) Consider what can you do for good business practices as a business person with scientific specialities. 4) Integrate knowledge of business and science.

Class flow

Each class has its own pre-reading materials. In the beginning of classes, students present the sammary of pre-reading materials and make analytical comments. Based on that the instructor will talk about each topics. In the class, the instructor often asks questions to students. This course encourages international students to participate in. The instructor speak in Japanese but students can talk both in Japanese and English. There are some reading materials students can read both in Japanese and English.

Class 1 Orientation:　Business and responsibilities for the future Learn about SDGs, ESG management, business and human rights.
Class 2 Workstyle changing: Work and life integration Learn about work and private life integration.
Class 3 Guest lecture: Professor Satoshi Ishibashi (Tokyo University of Science） Lean about corporate revitalization and National Diet for Japan Fukushima Nuclear Accident.
Class 4 Reflection of the guest lecture Each student write a report based on the guest lecture and discuss.
Class 5 Discussion based on an assignment book "Theory and Arithmetic" Read a famous book written by Eiichi Shibusawa and write a report. Then discuss in the class.
Class 6 Business community in future by watching TV Drama Learn from Japanese and foreign TV Drama series about business and working styles.
Class 7 Discussion based on an assignment book "No Rules" Students read a book about human resources management of Netflix and write a report about it. Discuss in the class.
Class 8 Corporate communication and risk assessment Learn from case studies and discuss in the groups.
Class 9 Corporate management and gender Learn about global discussion such as G20 leader's declaration and perspective of institutional investors.
Class 10 Discussion based on an assignment book "Conquering Alzheimer Disease" Each student read an assignment book, write a report before the class and discuss.
Class 11 Guest lecture: Mr. Susumu Shimoyama Learn about corporate decision making for new drug development especially about a silver bullet for Alzheimer's disease.
Class 12 Reflection of the guest lecture Each student write a report based on the guest lecture and discuss.
Class 13 Guest lecturer: Ms. Michiko Tadamatsu Listen to a lecturer who is originally computer scientist, then became strategic consultant for financial industry. Recently she started up her own business.
Class 14 Reflection of guest lecture and students think about their own career Students write a report based on talk of guest and think about their own future career.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

Three times of reading report assignment and reflection paper of based on guest lectures. Each report will be 1000-1200 words. Reading books requires several hours.

Assessment criteria and methods

Students knowledge, analytical skill and active participation are assessed. 3 reading reports and 3 guest lecture reflection (each 10%), participation and discussion in the class (20%), final report(20%) will be evaluated.
