Course description and aims

Students study online course materials and attend lecture in order to learn about educational technology (Edtech) and apply the knowledge they have gained to create an online course module in group on a topic they wish to teach to other students. English communication ability is required for this class.

Student learning outcomes

Students will learn about educational technology i.e. online learning (MOOCs, online courses) by studying online learning materials and apply their knowledge in order to create an online learning module using the open edX content/learning management system.

The instructor has 14 years of work experience at a Japanese multinational company as a staff researcher and group leader developing technology. He has also studied online materials in preparation to become a group leader at the above company.

Class flow

The instructor will hold the first class online at the scheduled time/date using ZOOM to give the course background and introduction. For the remaining weeks, online learning materials (videos, text) are studied on the edX edge web site. The course can be studied at own`s own pace except for the group project. The last class will consist of online student presentations on their education module, created as final group projects. Adjustments will be made to the class flow if needed to coordinate group work or to hold online office hours.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring online course material.

Textbook(s)

From April until June, a separate course website (edX edge) will be available that contains the instructional materials. The instructor will share the website with registered students by email.

Assessment criteria and methods

25% online material including quizzes, 25% online discussion/homework, 50% development of original online course module

This is the first of a two part course series related to online learning and educational technology using the open edX learning management system which is used for creating MOOCs on edX. Up to 20 students can enroll in this course.
