Course description and aims

This class examines research ethics. The purpose of the class is to acquire knowledge and skills for practising responsible research conduct. The class investigates cases in which research ethics matters by using an ethical decision-making method.

Student learning outcomes

Students are expected to be able to: 1) explain what research ethics is; 2) explain what an ethical decision-making method is; and, 3) solve moral problems in research by using the ethical decision-making method.

Class 1 introduction Be able to explain what research ethics is.
Class 2 Why does research ethics matter? Read and summarise the introductory chapter of the textbook.
Class 3 ethical issues in research methods Read and summarise Chapter 1 of the textbook
Class 4 ethical issues in planning and conducting research, and presenting research results Read and summarise Chapter 2 of the textbook
Class 5 research misconduct Read and summarise Chapter 3 of the textbook
Class 6 responsibility of supervisors and institutions Read and summarise Chapter 4 of the textbook
Class 7 wrap up Take 'THE LAB' the e-learning course.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
