Course description and aims

There has been an unprecedented urbanisation around the globe. This course aims to provide students knowledge and a set of tools to approach issues pertaining to urban space. By studying some of the issues in world cities as well as theoretical approaches to them, the course trains students' ability in observing and analysing urban space and in envisioning the city in the future.

Class flow

The course consists of classes on demand and online/on live. For the on-demand classes, students will answer quizzes and fill out feedback form. Prior to classes online/on live, students are assigned to read a short text of their choice from a reading list. They are asked to prepare notes and to fill out an assignment sheet to discuss them in a small group and to report the content back to the class.

Class 3 Narrative on the future: utopia, dystopia, post-human [pre-recorded lecture] Understand key issues, approaches, and problems involving in sound studies and connect them to the everyday in urban space
Class 4 Designing the future of urban space [seminar] Understand key ideas and concepts involving "home" and domesetic space in city life in the context of modernity.
Class 5 Perception and media in urban space [pre-recorded lecture] Understand key figures, ideas and concepts in social theories on urban space and sustainability .
Class 6 Preparing your individual/group presentation Students prepare their group presentation.
Class 7 Presentation sessions Give a group presentation and have an overall review of the course

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
