Course description and aims

The aim of this course is to help students acquire an understanding of the spiritual culture from the bubble period (late 1980's) to the earthquake disaster (2011) in Japan. Emphasis is placed on the relationship between spirituality and contemporary society. And Topics include spiritual boom and its background, young people's views of life and death and spiritual aspect of popular culture.

Student learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Obtain basic knowledge about spiritual culture.
2) Explain the background of spiritual boom.
3) Express their view on spirituality.

Class flow

Students must respond to the question from a teacher through the discussions or short reports. And they should reach the same degree of understanding as they exchange their points of view.
