Course description and aims

The aim of the class is to summarize one's thought into better essay through the following three activities: deliberating a the connection between student's major and the world and her/his own roles, responsibilities, and ethics in the connections, improving one's writing skill through understanding academic writing, and peer reviewing.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this class, students will be able to identify the connections between student’s major and the world and her/his own roles, responsibilities, and ethics in the connections, acquire academic writing and critical thinking skills and provide appropriate peer review advice. Also, they will be able to improve the evaluation and criticism of sentences.

Class flow

In the first half classes, students aim to acquire the writing skill. In the second half, each student sets a theme of the "Final Report" and practice peer review while receiving assistance from graduate students, i.e., peer review practical class, in order to brush up the report through peer review and to improve writing skills.
Lesson progress may vary slightly from class to class.
THe theme of the final thesis in English will be announced in the class.

Class 4 Peer review practices in each paragraph. Understanding how to write paragraphs
Class 5 Clear and concise expressions. Roles of sentences in paragraphs. Understanding how to write sentences.
Class 6 Peer-reviewing assignment. The first version of the final report (assignment).
Class 7 Overall sentence structure. Peer review activities. Understanding the construction of the thesis; the revision of the first draft.
Class 8 Adequate citation Understanding how to adequately cite materials. The second draft of the Final Report until next class (assignment)
Class 9 Peer review with attention to quotations and citations Based on peer review, the draft should be revised by the next class.
Class 10 Peer review with attention to sentence structure and citations Attaching a title to the Final report. Revising by the next class
Class 11 Pursuing the main subject (title, notes of composition) Understanding how to conduct online peer review.
Class 12 Online peer review Online peer-review and revise the essay accordingly.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Assessment criteria and methods

Instructors will score based on the completion of all the homework tasks and the final report (60 points) and peer review activity (40 points).
If you do some misconduct behaviors in the process of taking this class such as plagiarism, fabrication, or falsification, instructors will never qualify the course as a credit. Instructors will use a software package which detects plagiarized phrases. Mid-term submissions are mandatory.
If you miss over four classes, you will not acquire the credit for the course. Two late arrivals count as one absence. You will not be able to enter the class if you are late for more than 15 minutes (count as one absence).
