Course description and aims

In this course, we will take up the social system of early modern Japan.
You will study the historical background of modern social structure.

Student learning outcomes

1)To learn the social system of Japanese early modern history and compare it with modern society.
2)To understand the relationship between historical description and literary works.

Class flow

1)Topic changes every two lessons.2)At the beginning of each class, you will be given short comments on previously submitted reports and question.3)Towards the end of class, you will be given a short report related to what is taught on that day.

Class 3 Social order ② ―inheritance of Daimyo To think about "family".
Class 4 Personnel affairs ① ―Structure of personnel affairs To understand the bureaucratic route of success in the Tokugawa shogunate.
Class 5 Personnel affairs  ② ―Current status of career up. To consider the actual situation of career advancement, taking Ohoka Tadasuke and Moriyama Takamori as examples.
Class 6 How villains have been created. ① To understand how history villains are made, taking Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu as an example.
Class 7 How villains have been created. ② We will investigate the reason why historic descriptions and literary works have been different in the character drawn.
Class 8 Summary To complete the summary in answer to the questions given by the students.

Student course scores are based on final exams(70%)and short reports(30%).
