Course description and aims

Students will find topics to write about and acquire techniques for writing.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to write according to the format for academic papers as a result of practice.

Class flow

We will divide students into small groups in this course consisting of exercises.

Course schedule/Required learning

Class 1 Prepare contents to write. Make an experiment for revealing what you want to know.
Class 2 Style is simple. Problem, Objectives, Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion with Bibliography. Make a very short story according to the format of academic written style.
Class 3 How to make a research question Find a problem.
Class 4 Describe a problem. Pick up some sentences which address problems and make your notes in terms of the characteristics of problem sentences.
Class 5 Analyze the structure of a paragraph. Make a story using only topic sentences.
Class 6 Do literature research while writing a paper. Take notes if you find rules which you do not know in APA Manual.
Class 7 Presentation Prepare a presentation on a theme that you have chosen.
Class 8 Summary and Assessment Send comments on the last presentations by email.

Not specified but your notebook will be your textbook. Buy a B5 size at a dollar shop (a.k.a 100 yen shop).

Assessment criteria and methods

We will assess students contribution to discussions, poster presentations, a final report.

Students must submit homework by the time assigned. If you miss the homework deadline, you will not have any credit or scores. We will have four or five paper submission dues. In addition to that, you must submit the homework for each lecture day.
The paper presentation is mandatory in the middle of this course.
