Course description and aims

What kind of "liberal arts" should Ph.D.students of Tokyo Tech (Tokyo Institute of Technology) learn? Scientific research at the top level of the world requires several key competencies: (1) extensive knowledge beyond his/her discipline, (2) transferring skills and creativity to utilize other fields’ research, (3) interdisciplinary ability and spirit to build his/her network with diverse areas of specialists.
To acquire "liberal arts," students will have lectures by specialists in diverse fields, work in a small group, and give a presentation. This course aims to create the forum which facilitates knowledge exchange among Ph.D.students. Students will learn the trends of advanced and interdisciplinary research and how to collaborate with diverse fields of scholars and Master Course students.
International students can register this class (ability to speaking Japanese is not required).
Participants will communicate with students in different academic fields, international students, and Master Course students in English.

Student learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) have their idea and vision of "liberal arts."
2) understand lectures of specialists who conduct advanced and interdisciplinary studies.
3) take group work and communicate with students in different fields, master course students and international students also in English.
4) present the results of their group-work in the postal presentation or competition style.
5) acquire leadership, ability to the innovative challenge idea, conduct interdisciplinary research, and communication skills.

Class flow

With (LAH.A542)Glocal JAPAN Y2, 40 students can register. In case applying over 40 students, registration will be restricted(See, "Prerequisites" and "Others" of this syllabus).
This course is three days camp. It will open in Ookayama Campus through 3rd to 5th March 2019.

Guest Lecturers: Keigo Shimakage(Oton Glass), Nobumichi Tosa(Meiwa Denki) Day1: Proposing theme by the pair of students and make groups by two or three pairs of students agreeing with the subject.
