Course description and aims

Students carry out a problem-solving task on a topic of decision making. The topic is determined through discussions with the instructor. The student gets a deep understanding of the topic by reading related literature, and associated problems are defined and solved through problem solving activities and discussions. While carrying out a problem-solving task, students learn how to solve problems by applying specialist knowledge in the decision making field as well as fundamental knowledge of other related fields that have been acquired through enrolling in various courses. They also learn problem-solving techniques such as collecting, analyzing, and studying data, and cultivate their ability to look at things from many perspectives. In addition, They write a report and give a presentation on their findings.

This course forms a central part of Tokyo Tech’s laboratory-based education where individual students work on a specific problem. It has a complementary relationship with coursework based on a structured curriculum. By addressing an issue, it is expected that students will increase their knowledge in the decision making field and that they will acquire comprehensive skills to identify and develop solutions for new and unsolved problems.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Apply their specialist knowledge of decision making to solving problems
2) Study the fundamentals of fields other than decision making independently to solve problems
3) Understand the significance of decision making problems, judge their influence on society, and solve them
4) Explain concepts logically, discuss them, and put them in writing
5) Work as an independent researcher and have the knowledge and oral competence to present their point of view effectively during discussions

Assessment criteria and methods

Assessment will be based on “summary reports” (40% in total), the final report (30%), and the final presentation (30%).
