Course description and aims

The aim of this class is to practice peer review of papers by reading and critiquing papers written by you peers, while at the same time giving them valuable advice on how to improve their papers.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this class, students will be able to acquire academic writing and critical thinking skills, and provide appropriate peer review advice.

Class flow

Instructors will give instructions on an appropriate way of cademic writing and peer-review activities in the first several classes, then students review peer's essay with graduate students' support (Peer Review class in graduate course).

Class 1 Introduction, understanding of paragraph wrirting, and groupwork for search of theme of a short essay. Writing a paragraph with a given theme in 300 japanese letters (assiignment)
Class 2 Guidline of peer review. Peer review of the paragraph, Critisizing and editing a paragraph hard to read.
Class 3 Appropriate citation. Write a paragraph with a given sentence with an appropriate way of citation.
Class 4 Peer review of paragraph with a given sentence citation, Construction of whole essay. Decide the theme of the essay, Construct the essay and write topic sentences with including examples and its rationale.
Class 5 Construction of the essay. Construct the essay.
Class 6 Group work; peer review of the construction of the essay. Online peer-review and revise the essay accordingly.
Class 7 Group work; peer review of the construction of the essay. Online peer-review and revise the essay accordingly.
Class 8 Writing the first draft of the essay Writing the first draft of the essay

Class 10 Peer review of the first draft, Understand the on-line peer review system. Peer review and revise the essay accordingly.
