Course description and aims

What kind of "liberal arts" should Ph.D. course students of Tokyo Tech learn? Scientific research at the top level of the world requires several key competence: (1) extensive knowledge beyond his/her own discipline, (2) transferring skills and creativity to utilize other fields’ research, (3) interdisciplinary ability and spirit to build his/her own network with specialists in diverse fields.
In order to acquire the "liberal arts" competence above, students will design their own advanced liberal arts course. More concretely, students first choose a general topic of the course. Second, they invite relevant experts for lectures and discuss about course organization, workshop organization and its PR activities. The purpose of this course is to create the forum which facilitates knowledge exchange among Ph.D. course students through designing a liberal art course for themselves. In the process, students will learn the most recent trends of interdisciplinary research.
Foreign students can be register this class (ability to speaking Japanese is not required).
Communicate with students in different academic fields and with foreign students in English.

Student learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) have their own visions about "liberal arts" which Ph.D.students should acquire.
2) establish communication among students different academic fields and foreign students.
3) select interdisciplinary and cutting-edge topics which will be investigated in their Ph.D.program, and ask relevant specialists for lecture.
4) consider PR activities of the course workshop and the activity report.
5) acquire the leadership ability as researcher by moderating discussions and considering conference organization.

Class flow

50 students can be registered. In case over 50 students apply, the registration will be restricted(See, "Prerequisities" and "Others" of this sylabus).
Two successive sessions will take place basically on every other Saturday. Students will decide the general theme of Path-Breaking Liberal Arts Courses of the year.
Students will sellect a guest speaker of mini-symposium, overall approach of the course, and the process of workshop.

Class 1 First Saturday class of two sessions before noon. Introduction and Discussion about the Theme of whole year project. Taking participants self-instruction and establishing communication. Understand the aim and tasks of the course.
Class 2 Second Saturday class of two sessions before noon. Activity of planning and managing committee. Discussion about group work and mini-symposium in Path-Breaking Liberal Arts Courses.
Class 3 Third Saturday class of two sessions before noon. Activity of information and editorial committee. Select guest speaker of mini-symposium and PR activity of Path-Breaking Liberal Arts Courses. Make materials needed.
Class 4 Fourth Saturday class of two sessions before noon. Organizing a group-work in the second quater Organize a group-work of this course and Path-Breaking Liberal Arts Courses.

Students should register before 16 April. In case over 50 students apply, send results of restricting registration by OCWi system.

Students are expected to commit themselves to the course.
This course is seminar style. Students are also required activities outside of the individual sessions.

Other

PhD. course students have to take any two class of Indipendent Studies Courses (from 1 to 8) or Path-Breaking Liberal Arts Courses (from 1 to 6) for two credits. (Indipendent Studies Courses 5,6,7,8 and Path-Breaking Liberal Arts Courses 4,5,6 will be held from 2017 spring.)

NOTICE: We strongly recommend to register an Independent Studies Courses and a Path Breaking Liberal Arts Courses at first academic year.
REASON: Independent Studies Courses 5,6,7,8 and Path-Breaking Liberal Arts Courses 4,5,6 will be listed enabling for the students who had registered an Independent Studies Courses or Path-Breaking Liberal Arts Courses at the same Q, to register another Courses in the Next Year. (It may be a rare case.) Independent Studies Courses at the same Q (1&5, 2&6, 3&7, 4&8) are the same program, not independently open.(It is applicable to Path-Breaking Liberal Arts Courses.)
The restricting registration will be taken based on the number of students by total number without distinction of academic year.
