Course description and aims

This course is to facilitate students’ understanding and ability of leadership. These will be built on fundamental abilities to read, write and listen, gained from 100-300 courses mainly provided by ILA.
Desirable leadership can be unstable, infinitive and suddenly change with the times and places. So this course deals with necessary fundamental and effective skills for leadership in the future, including face-to-face skills (presentation and facilitation) and non-face-to-face skills (reading, writing and editing).

Student learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to;
Explain the concept of leadership and
Acquire fundamental abilities of face-to-face and non-face-to-face skills for development of leadership, through group works.

Class flow

At the beginning of every class, the learning activity and tasks are explained. Then, students are required to solve exercise problems and drills related to the lecture given that day. The order of the course schedule is subject to be changed according to the class. Read the course schedule which is distributed at the first class.

Class 1 Fundamentals of discussion, group work, and facilitation, Activity drill of group work on what the leadership is. Understand ways of discussion, group work and facilitation
Class 2 Proof read and write: Proof the short essay, the students were tasked in the previous class, by a group work. Understand proof read and write. Proof read and write a short essay.
Class 3 Re-editing: Edit the short essay again, which the students read in the previous class, by a student and by group work. Understand editing, and proof read and write. Re-edit the short essay.
Class 4 Presentation on leadership: An experience of a student him/her-self is presented in a small group. Group members including the student improve the presentation. Understand the leadership through reviewing a student’s own experience on leadership. Improve a presentation skill through group work.
Class 5 Presentation on leadership, by using the one brushed-up in the previous lecture. Use the presentation improved in a whole class. Consider better way demonstrating leadership.
Class 6 Consensus building and group work. Understand various ways to build consensus through group work.
Class 7 Various forms of organizations. Group work on merits and demerits of actual organizations the students picked up and investigated. Understand merits and demerits of traditional and emergent organizations.
Class 8 Summary of leadership and followership of student him/her-self. Review attitude of student own, related to leadership.

Assessment criteria and methods

Students will be assessed on their understanding and commitment of 1. proof read and write, 2 presentation on leadership, and 3. consensus building and group work.
