Course description and aims

This course aims at learning the basic skills for analyzing the international relations by overviewing especially the modern European history after the establishment of the Westphalia system in 1648.
This course has three main purposes. The first is to understand the basic concepts of state, nation and ethnicity, and the background of various international issues due to the national/ethnic conflicts. The second is to acquire how to logically analyze current (international) political issues based on participants' own view. The last but not least is to get accustomed to following the international politics with applying the skills acquired through the course.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will understand:
1) What can be seen on the background of international/interethnic cooperation/conflicts.
2) What has international community experienced through 2 World Wars for the purpose of preventing conflicts.
3) How has international community been formed in the post Cold War period.
4) How can the current international political issues be analyzed.

Class flow

Topics change every two lessons.
Every lesson constitutes of the lecture part (60-70 min) and discussion/short assignment part (20-30 min).

Textbooks will be introduced in every lectures. Participants are required to get used to follow news and articles on daily basis.

Reference books, course materials, etc.

The lecture material will be usually arranged with MS power point.

Assessment criteria and methods

Participation activity and short assignments submitted after lessons: 60%
Final exam: 40%
