Course description and aims

This lecture provides an overview of user research methods and workshops, for both quantitatively and qualitatively. This aims to grasp the advantages and disadvantages of each method.

Student learning outcomes

The aims of this lecture are:
1. to grasp the characteristics of quantitative research,
2. to grasp the characteristics of qualitative research,
3. to grasp the overview of workshop for user research.

Class flow

This lecture consists of 5 talks and 3 exercises.

Course schedule/Required learning

Class 1 overview of research methods and characteristics of quantitative data and qualitative data Understanding the overview of research methods and the characteristics of quantitative and qualitative data, as an introduction.
Class 2 quantitative research Understanding the metrics by the questionnaire methods.
Class 3 qualitative research Understanding the metrics by interview and observation.
Class 4 Exercise 1 (targetting the topic and deciding the method) Targetting the topic and deciding the method for the presentation.
Class 5 Exercise 2 (conducting the research) Conducting the research.
Class 6 Exercise 3 (analysis) Conducting analysis.
Class 7 presentation Presenting the results of the exercises.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
