Course description and aims

In the 21st century, we are experiencing a shift to a knowledge driven economy. The source of competitiveness has changed from production efficiency towards differentiation, creativity and innovation. How innovations can be stimulated in all sectors from micro to macro levels are critical issues of concern. The course aims that students learn basic concepts related to SSI (Sectoral Innovation Systems) and NSI(National Systems of Innovation).
The course relates to the various agenda concerning technology strategies at the level of a firm, sector or a nation. Based on empirical research findings, systems of innovation in sectors such as information and communications, robotics, mobile telecom, nanotechnology are studied. The instructor will use case studies to illustrate the concepts.

Student learning outcomes

Students will acquire the knowledge and expertise to analyse various sectoral innovation systems, including technological competence building, technology diffusion mechanisms, innovation related networks, major technological trajectories related to different sectors. In addition, students will be able to acquire knowledge to analyze National Systems of Innovation and will be able to understand the Silicon Valley model, the EU model.

Class flow

The course will be conducted for 1st and 2nd quarters. The students will be taught through active learning. Students will do 3 team presentations, have quizzes, write essays and are encouraged to take part in discussions.
