Course description and aims

This course aims to provide basic knowledge of second language acquisition (SLA) and language learning. Students will learn the concept definition of second language acquisition, language aptitude, individual factors of learners, motivation theory in learning, the method of SLA, and evaluation of learning outcomes by using Japanese language education method. Students will gain the concept of SLA through lectures, reading, discussions, group work and problem solving exercises in class. This course will also provide an opportunity to look back on each individual’s foreign language learning experience and consider an effective way of language learning.

Student learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
1) Understand the basic concepts of SLA and state the method of SLA; and
2) Develop a practical way of language learning and evaluating learning outcome.

Class flow

In the first half, the students investigate the basis of SLA, summarize, and make presentations. In the second half, as an application of SAL research method, students will plan and conduct a small survey on SLA.

Class 1 The mechanism of SLS and language processing Analyze the relation between language acquisition and age factor, social factors, learning style based on your own learning experience.
Class 2 The mechanism of SLA Read the literature of language processing theory.
Class 3 The process of Second language learning Read the literature of second language learning.
Class 4 Second language learning method Research the method of effective second language learning, and present the theory, method and effectiveness.
Class 5 The evaluation of learning outcome Make a learning plan of a second language, study and keep a record the process.
Class 6 Second language acquisition and motivation Evaluate the outcome of second language learning.
Class 7 Presentation and discussion Present the result of second language learning project (including the theoretical background, method, result and evaluation).

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
