In the 2018 academic year this course is titled “Cinema study: analysis of the visual performance". It provides participants with an opportunity to deeply consider the nature of film by watching a pair of films. In the end students are to consider what the fim is and the way in which the art of film interact with our life and society.
At the end of this course students will be able to:
・analyse a pair of particular films critically with some fundamental ways in which film is conceived of
・communicate with others who are supposed to have different point of views and critically discuss thier film analysis
・write a paper on film that is thematic in nature, citing primary and secondary sources

(1)Students watch part of the film selected for the course.
(2)A short discussion will be held at the end of each filming session about critical issues reflected on the film.
(3)A short, individual presentation and discussion in session 7 and 8 for their final essays that must be submitted within a week after the final class.

The instructor selects two films that the students have never watched from the list.

-Neither prior experience of the discipline of Cinema study nor advanced knowledge of cinema theory are required.
-What IS required is an ability to listen to others deeply, accept the other's points of view, and shared your opinions.
-Ability to discuss critical issues in Japanese is also essential.
Ideally students would take this course in sequence in 2018, following Graduate Lecture in Culture and Arts S1A.
