This course consists of two parts. In the first part the instructor introduces theory and history of modern design. In the second part students will learn history and problem of relationship between art and society.
This course aims to understand history and various theories of the plastic arts. In the end of this course students will learn a critical way of thinking about modern art and design.
At the end of this course students will:
・ obtain knowledge about modern art and design.
・ be familiar with basic concepts for understanding the plastic arts.
・ explain and comment on works of the plastic arts.

In the first part the instructor give lectures by explaining history and theory of modern design. Students will be requested to write short comments. After the lecture, the instructor will give a review of them and all participants will have a further discussion referring them. Presentation and text reading are also planned.
In the second part students will appreciate modern art in various ways. At the end of course students will design a workshop to appreciate works of art in a group.
