Course description and aims

Standards and industry are closely interlinked. Standards must be determined based on science and technology, but are frequently influenced by other societal aspects. Standards set on the basis of factors other than science and technology are not unusual. For example, almost all engineers may be confused by the co-existence of both ISO and ASME standards. Focusing on the materials used in many industries, this course provides an overview of the standard-setting process required now and in the future for the global engineer.

Student learning outcomes

This lecture enables students to show a basic guidline for the standardization of the material engineering.

Course schedule/Required learning

  Course schedule Required learning
Class 1 Guidance. Type of standards, Standardization and industry To understand the type of standards and the relation between industry and standards, and the role and its significance of the standard in industry
Class 2 Mechanism of international standards To understand the process to determine international standards
Class 3 Mechanism of Japanese standards To understand the process to determine Japanese standards
Class 4 Position of materials in industry and Materials-related standards and science and technology To understand materials science and technology in industry and understand the relation between the standard and science and technology
Class 5 An example of ISO standard vs American standard in a field of engineering To understand the problems in the relation between ISO standards and American standards, which causes difficulty for engineers in a global company
Class 6 Examples in many fields of engineering To understand the situation which depends of fields of engineering.
Class 7 Standards, policy of governments, democracy and capitalism To understand the standards are influenced by the policy of governments as well as science and technology under democracy and capitalism.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

The relation between science, industry, and standards depends on the field of science and technology. To recognize this point and to enhance effective learning, each student will be required to pick up an example of standard in his/her related field and make a presentation to share the situation of the relation.
