Course description and aims

Students are expected to deepen their understanding on the history and current issues of economic development and environmental protection in Japan and the students' home countries through lectures, discussions and presentations. The major frameworks of international and regional cooperation will also be picked up as means to solve the problems caused by uneven development and environmental destruction.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Understand the major history and characteristics of Japan's economic development.
2. Understand the major issues caused by Japan's economic development and the efforts to solve them.
3. Understand the major international and regional cooperation frameworks to solve the problems caused by uneven development and environmental destruction.
4. Have a clear view on one of the issues related with uneven development and environmental destruction in their home countries.
5. Understand one of the issues related with uneven development and environmental destruction in the countries of their classmates.

Class flow

The first five classes will be mainly composed of lectures and discussions. In the last three classes students will give presentations on how to solve the problems caused by uneven development and environmental destruction in their home countries. The wrap up discussion will be held in the last class.

Class 4 Environmental pollution, Basic Act for Environmental Pollution Control, Oil shock, Bubble economy and its collapse
Class 5 Current issues of Japan and the world, Frameworks of international and regional cooperation
Class 6 The specific issues caused by uneven development and/or environmental destruction in students' home countries-East Asia
Class 7 The specific issues caused by uneven development and/or environmental destruction in students' home countries-South East Asia
Class 8 The specific issues caused by uneven development and/or environmental destruction in students' home countries-South Asia and other regions, Wrap up discussion
