Course description and aims

In this course, students will learn the effective use of solid wastes in the form of energy and resource recovery. For waste use, appropriate combination of various technologies ranging from combustion control, exhaust gas treatment, high efficiency energy conversion and waste management is essential. A variety of such technologies will be explained and an incinerator plant visit will be arranged to understand state of the art technologies focusing on the waste incineration process. Then, non-incineration based new waste management technologies will be introduced and students will give presentations on the effective measures for waste management in their home countries to gain better understandings of the waste management situation in each country.

Student learning outcomes

【Target】Students will acquire comprehensive and deep knowledge on the status and future prospects of waste management in the world focusing on waste management technologies.
【Theme】In this course, various technologies related to waste incineration will be introduced to inform students about the state of the art in waste treatment procedures. Then advanced non-incineration based technologies will be explained to let the students consider the appropriate waste management schemes for their home countries.

Keywords

Waste management, Waste incineration, Waste power generation, Low environmental impact, Waste utilization

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

In the first half of the course, lectures will be given, and a waste incineration plant visit will be arranged to see the real implementation of technologies. In the latter half of the course, presentations and discussions in English by students will be conducted.
