Course description and aims

Energy science is a strong example of science deeply rooted in the society because 1) energy is needed for every one's daily life, 2)people's view about energy have very wide diversity, the relationship between energy consumption and quality of life is a question opened for all members of the society.Therefore scientists and engineers in energy research field ought to have own philosophy of the dialogue with non-scientists. This course aims to establish a base on which students create their own idea for building a scaffolding for dialogue among people with different background through the participatory design to energy business.

Student learning outcomes

This intensive course is designed to give students insight into various knowledge and opinions related to energy and society with a focus on participatory design to energy business. Especially this year we will shed the light to the business continuity issues and disaster recovery in diary business , students will be informed by and talked with the specialists of this issues related to risk management, low energy consumption devices and regional revitalization in order to let students think out the methodology to mitigate disaster damage especially to vulnerable groups. By these tasks students could learn the perspective of bridging global environmental issues and local business sustainability issues .

Class flow

In the first half of the class, a guest speaker who is an actor in the leading edge research or business deliver a lecture and pose questions. In the latter half, the main points of the lecture and questions are discussed in detail. Students are asked to provide solutions to some of the questions through group work and ask their own questions suitably under the leadership of the instructor(facilitator).

Class 1 This is intensive course held during 14 June to 5 July with 3 classes (on 14,21,28 June) and 4 classes on 5 July per day. Students will be informed and required to discuss about the following theme: Theme 1 : Participatory design for energy business Theme 2: Japanese New Strategic Energy Plan and community based smart grit Theme 3: Risk management in disaster and low energy consumption device Theme 4:Possibility of smart diary and business continuity Theme 5: Case study of participatory design for community based business continuity in smart agriculture The instructor indicates assignment.
