Course description and aims

Sustainable energies have played a more important role in terms of energy generation and environmental protection. In this course, you will learn biomass energy including model simulations of available water for biomass cultivation and prospective power generation as well as social and environmental disadvantages of sustainable energies. After discussion with teammates, you will present the diffusion strategy of biomass power. You are expected to improve your discussion and presentation skills.

Student learning outcomes

You will learn basic model simulation and experience the advantages and limitations of a model simulation. You will also learn the inevitable socio-environmental limitations of sustainable energies. You will train your English communication and discussion skills in the discussion on the diffusion strategy of biomass energy in comparison with solar energy.

Keywords

Sustainable energy, biomass power generation, model simulation, diffusion strategy

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

This course includes lectures and group works. In lectures, you will learn basic model simulation, biomass power technology, and socio-environmental limitations of sustainable energies. In group works, you perform simulations, analyze simulation data, and discuss the diffusion strategy of biomass power with your teammates. You will also make presentation materials.

Course schedule/Required learning

  Course schedule Required learning
Class 1 Orientation, Lecture on a tank model simulation You practice model simulation using tank model and understand variable optimization.
Class 2 Group work (tank model simulation) You practice model simulation using tank model and understand variable optimization.
Class 3 Interim Presentation According to group presentations about the same topic, you learn understandable presentation.
Class 4 Lecture on biomass power generation, Group work You learn technological and environmental advantages and disadvantages of biomass power generation.
Class 5 Lecture on socio-environmental limitations of sustainable energies, Group work You learn public and environmental disadvantages of sustainable energy and importance of multilateral perspective for energy sources.
Class 6 Group work You discuss perspective of biomass power generation in comparison with solar power and design biomass strategy.
Class 7 Final Presentation You present perspective of biomass power and propose biomass strategy.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend a certain length of time outside of class on preparation and review (including for assignments), as specified by the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Undergraduate Learning (東京工業大学学修規程) and the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Graduate Learning (東京工業大学大学院学修規程), for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
