Course description and aims

The course is designed to understand stereoelectronic effects to understand general reactivity of organic compounds and stereoselectivity in organic reactions. This course also focuses on the fundamental aspects of the intermolecular interactions associated with organic molecules as well as the structures of supramolecular assemblies.

Student learning outcomes

Students will able to explain basic facts related to the stereochemistry of organic compounds and the stereoselectivity of reactions such as the stereoelectronic effect and molecular orbital theory. Students will also gain an understanding of the role of intermolecular interactions on the structures and reactions of organic compounds.

Keywords

Stereoelectronic effect, Stereochemistry, Intermolecular interaction, Supramolecular chemistry

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

Most course contents and topics are given by board writing.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Textbook(s)

None

Reference books, course materials, etc.

For stereoelectronic effects

2) Stereochemistry in Organic Compounds, E. L. Eliel and S. H. Wilen, Wiley;

Assessment criteria and methods

Students’ course scores are based on final exams, which will be held on-site (but, it depends on the situation at that moment and may be changed to a different method, e.g., an online exam.). Exercise problems and/or reporting assignments will also be considered.
