Course description and aims

This course aims to provide students with basic knowledge on the processes in the chemical plants, which plays important role in human civilization. At each meeting, students will be introduced to a specific major industrial process such as petroleum, coal, cement, and agrichemical industry, and the underlying process that was used to transform raw material into product was explained. Moreover, production trends of the commodities as well as environmental issues related to various industries will also be covered.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Understand the general flow of material inside various chemical industries.
Understand the general trend and future prospect of various chemical industries.
Understand the environmental issues related to various chemical industries.

Keywords

Industrial chemistry, chemical plant, chemical process, chemical synthesis

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

Different industrial chemical processes will be covered at each meeting, including the future prospect and environmental issues related to the processes.

Course schedule/Required learning

Class 2 Chemical processing, unit operations, unit processes Explain about basic concepts and definitions in chemical process industry.
Class 3 Part 1: Organic Chemical Industries - Petroleum Industry Identify the industries belonging to organic chemical industry. Study and analyse the petroleum industry, including its manufacturing process, its operational and technical considerations, and the environmental implications of the petroleum industry.
Class 4 Petrochemical Industry Examine the petrochemical industry. Study the manufacturing process, the chemical reactions involved to produce petrochemicals and learn about the environmental implications of the industry.
Class 5 Rubber industry Examine the rubber industry. Know the manufacturing process, chemical reactions involved to produce rubber products, and also learn about the environmental impacts of the rubber industry.
Class 6 Polymer industry: production of fiber and films Analyse at the polymer industry. Know the manufacturing process, chemical reactions involved to produce synthetic fibres and films, and also learn about the environmental impacts of the polymer industry.
Class 7 Biomass for energy and chemical production Explain how energy and chemical feedstock are produced from biomass. Analyse typical process diagrams used in the production of energy and chemicals from biomass. State some critical environmental issues in the biomass sector.
Class 8 Soaps and detergents industry Differentiate between soap and detergents. Know how soaps and detergents are being produced, enumerate the steps in its manufacturing process, the technical considerations and environmental issues in the soaps and detergent industry.
Class 9 Pharmaceutical industry Scrutinise the pharmaceutical industry. Learn about the manufacturing process, reactions, regulatory requirements involved to produce pharmaceutical products. Study issues on environmental implications in the pharmaceutical industry.
Class 10 Part II: Inorganic Chemical Industries - Agrochemical industry (Manufacture of synthetic fertilisers) Study the manufacture of synthetic fertilisers, including the manufacturing process, technical considerations in producing fertilisers, together with its environmental impacts.
Class 11 Inorganic Chemical Production (Sulphuric acid, ammonia, caustic soda) Identify the different manufacturing process and technical considerations in the production of inorganic chemicals specifically, sulphuric acid, ammonia, and caustic soda. Also, state the environmental implications of the production of mentioned inorganic chemicals.
Class 12 Cement industry Analyse the cement industry, including its manufacturing process, technical considerations in cement production, together with its environmental implications.
Class 13 Invited speaker from the chemical process industry Learn about the actual experience and issues encountered by a CPI professional working in the industry.
Class 14 Final report presentation Students will report in class about their assigned topics.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks, reading assignments, assigned learning materials.
