Students will gain the knowledge of basic mechanical properties that have to be considered in design and selection of elements used in mechanical systems. Specifically, by focusing on shafts, screws, bearings, and gears etc. as basic machine elements in mechanical systems, students will learn methods of (i) selecting machine elements that satisfy the design specifications and (ii) designing them based on mechanical strength. They are fulfilled through lectures on the points one should note regarding the functions, types, characteristics, and methods of use of each machine element, and modeling and calculation of basic mechanical models. Furthermore, students will learn methods of expressing these mechanical elements using three-dimensional (3D) CAD software.
By learning these, students will acquire fundamental idea and specific skills toward the selection of engineering materials and design based on their mechanical strength.
By completing this course, student will attain the following fundamental abilities to:
(1) Select engineering materials based on their mechanical properties
(2) Use and fulfill the fundamental idea regarding selection and strength design of basic machine elements
(3) Graphically express basic machine elements
Machine design, Machine element, Mechanical properties of engineering materials
✔ Specialist skills | Intercultural skills | Communication skills | Critical thinking skills | ✔ Practical and/or problem-solving skills |
Each class of this course is held for four consecutive periods (i.e., for three hours). The latter two periods are for exercises where students work on problems related to the content of the lecture given in that day.
Students are required to self-study the contents prior to the class using a textbook and/or supplementary material. Based on this, the contents are lectured in the class about specific design cases abundantly employing explanations provided with graphics and models.
Course schedule | Required learning | |
---|---|---|
Class 1 | Introduction of machine design | Overall flow of machine design is learned. The role of selection and design of machine elements in it and documentation of machine design are also learned. |
Class 2 | Classification and mechanical properties of engineering materials, Basics of structural member design | Types of engineering materials and mechanical properties used in mechanical systems are learned. Important points related to selection of materials to be taken into consideration in machine design are also learned. Exercises are done at the end of class. |
Class 3 | Design of shafts | Cases of usage of shafts in mechanical systems are learned. Basic idea and methods used in dimensional design of shafts based on strength criteria under varying load conditions are also learned. Exercises are done at the end of class. |
Class 4 | Design of fasteners | Types and features of fasteners are learned. Idea and methods for selecting and designing threaded fasteners are concretely learned. Exercises are done at the end of class. |
Class 5 | Overviews of mechanical design using 3D CAD software and feature-based modeling. | Understand concept and idea of feature-based modeling, and acquire ability to use them in design of machine elements using 3D CAD software. |
Class 6 | Basics of guide element design and 3D CAD representation | Understand basics of guide elements such as bearings and their representation with 3D CAD software |
Class 7 | Basics of power transmission element design and 3D CAD representation | Understand basics of power transmission elements such as gears and their representation with 3D CAD software |
To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
JSME Text Series "機械要素設計"
Supplementary handouts may be uploaded to OCW-i as needed.
Learning achievement is evaluated based on results of homeworks (50%) and exercises (50%).
Only the students belonging to the department of Mechanical Engineering or students who have taken “Machine Elements and Machine Drawing (MEC.H201)”are allowed to take this course.
It is desired that students have taken or take “Mechanics of Materials (MEC.C201)” prior to or at the same time as this course.
Conditions required for students to participate in classes that use CAD software:
To participate in classes where CAD software (Inventor) is used, one has to satisfy the following two conditions.
Each student has to have the following laptop PC that satisfies the following specifications.
Type: Laptop PC. No tablet devices are allowed. A mouse has to be equipped.
OS: Windows 10 64bit is required. No macOS and Linux are allowed.
CPU: Core i3 or newer. Equivalent AMD CPUs are also allowed.
GPU: One integrated in a CPU is sufficient.
Memory: 8 GB or higher.
Storage: 250 GB or higher. SSD recommended.
(Note: In AY2021, in case you cannot have a laptop PC, use of a desktop PC is also allowed if the above specifications are satisfied.)
The Inventor software with specified version has been installed to that PC, and the running of software has been confirmed at least 1 week before the first day of the CAD-using class; namely, before the the 4th week of this course.
To install Inventor software, refer to the installation manual for students (PDF file) in the following URL:
http://www.pcroom.mech.e.titech.ac.jp/
The information of the software version is also found in the above manual.
(Note: From outside university, you have to use VPN to access the above URL.)
Notes, cautions, etc.:
* If you cannot buy a laptop PC that satisfy the above specifications even though one has managed to, please contact and explain the situation to Assoc. Prof. Murakami before April 30th.
* Inventor software is not supported in Mac PCs.
* If you fail to install Inventor software into your laptop PC, contact the support faculty members (pcroom@mech.e.titech.ac.jp) as soon as possible.
* You have to finish learning the basic operations of Inventor software in prior by referring to the materials that will be uploaded beforehand.
