Course description and aims

This lecture presents an overview of mechanisms of natural disasters, focusing on earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, and storm surges, which could particularly bring about significant impact on society among many types of disasters. The lecture also discusses disaster risk and vulnerability associated with a rapid urban development or climatic change. Finally, basic engineering technique such as statistical analysis, data analysis and numerical modeling are taught in order to enable students to quantitatively deal with phenomenon during disasters.

By the end of this course, students will be able to understand:
1) Basic mechanisms of disasters
2) Causality between disasters and development / climatic issues
3) Basic engineering knowledge to quantitatively deal with disasters
