Course description and aims

This course focuses on the fundamental mechanical behavior of structural concrete.
Specifically, each student is required to understand the following items: (1) limit state design method of structural concrete, (2) fracture mechanics of concrete, and (3) the basic concept of the size effect of structural concrete.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, each student will be able to:
(1) understand the basic concept on the mechanical design of structural concrete.
(2) calculate the flexural capacity of a reinforced concrete member subjected to bending moment and axial force.
(3) calculate the shear capacity of a reinforced concrete member subjected to shear force.
(4) calculate the torsion capacity of a reinforced concrete member subjected to torsion.
(5) understand the basic concept on the fracture mechanics of concrete and the size effect of structural concrete.

Class flow

To confirm whether the students have understood the contents of each class or not, some assignment will be given occasionally. In the class, students will be asked by the instructor and need to answer to these questions. In an odd year of the western calender, the lecture will be given by English and in an even year of the western calender, the lecture will be given by Japanese.

Class 7 Basics of fracture mechanics of concrete. Submission of Assignment No.1.
Class 8 Fracture energy of concrete and tension softening curve. Return of Assignment No.1 and comments.
Class 9 Flexural strength of concrete and its size effect.
Class 10 Mechanical behavior of structural concrete subjected to bending moment and axial force. Assignment No.2: Ultimate capacity of structural concrete member subjected to bending moment and axial force.
Class 11 Mechanical behavior of structural concrete subjected to shear force. Submission of Assignment No.2.
Class 12 Truss analogy and modified truss analogy. Return of Assignment No.2 and comments.
Class 13 Shear capacity of structural concrete member subjected to shear force.
Class 14 Mechanical behavior of structural concrete subjected to torsion.

Assessment criteria and methods

Assignment (10%), and Final exam (90%). 60% is required to get the credit.
