Course description and aims

The purpose of this course is for students to understand the knowledge, skills, social responsibilities, and ethics necessary to play an active role in society as a basis for their own career design, to correctly understand the reality of research and development through practical training at internship sites, and to realize further development of their own research and development with an awareness of problems based on their experiences. Specifically, students will investigate the activities and research content of the internship organization in advance, and decide on the internship site (company or external research institution) after sufficient discussion with their supervisor. At the end of the internship, the student will present an oral and written report on the internship and its results.

Student learning outcomes

While mastering fields related to urban and environmental studies, students will have a thorough understanding of the basic ethics and social responsibilities of being a member of society. Furthermore, by actually experiencing advanced research and development in companies or university research institutions outside Tokyo Tech, students will have problem consciousness that cannot be gained through academic courses, and that is conducive to the following lectures and thesis research.
(1) Understand and be able to correctly explain the meaning of social responsibility and ethics based on the social position and social activities of the internship institution as a preliminary survey.
(2) To be able to reconfirm the basic literacy required for researchers based on the preliminary research and to discover the abilities that are lacking in oneself.
(3) Be able to think about and practice the actions necessary to improve the abilities that you lack.
(4) Correctly grasp the current state of actual research and development.
(5) Develop a critical mind for experience-based research and development.
(6) Understand the meaning of leadership and be able to practice it.
(7) Understand the meaning of entrepreneurship, be highly motivated to create, boldly tackle all kinds of problems, and be able to implement original ideas based on deep insight.
(8) Understand social responsibility and ethics as a researcher and member of society, and be able to practice them.

Class flow

Students will be required to pick up several internship institutions (if possible) and conduct research on the social position, social activities, corporate philosophy, ethics, etc. of the internship institutions on the basis of data on corporate activities published by the companies, reports disclosed to the public, and research results. After about one week of research, students will report the results of these investigations to their supervisors and narrow down the candidates for internship institutions that are relevant to their own research activities and that can advance their own research more deeply and widely.

During the first week or so of the internship, you will be required to report to your supervisor on the consistency between the results of the research in your preliminary preparation and the actual situation, as well as any new matters you have noticed, and to express your thoughts on your own career design. You are also expected to summarize the results of the survey in a concise and straightforward report.

To understand the actual situation of research and development through practical work, and to learn about the nature of research and development, social responsibility, ethics, etc. At the end of the internship, students are required to report orally and in writing on the contents of the preparations for the research, etc. conducted in advance, the activities at the internship site, and the results. Students will provide their oral presentations to several faculty members, including the supervisor, who will respond to questions and comments.
