Course description and aims

This course provides theories and research frameworks in social innovation and social entrepreneurship. Through the case studies, discussions, and group works, students can aquire the abilities that contribute to make a bridge between the theory and practice.

· Understand the background and characteristics of social innovation and social entrepreneurship.
· Aquire the abliliy to discover social issues and to present and implement the solutions in a sustainable manner.

Class flow

Firstly, students learnUnderstand the characteristics of social entrepreneurship.
Secondly, students discuss based on case studies.
Thirdly, students develop social entrepreneurship business model.

Class 4 Case study 1 Explain one of the approaches to solving social issues “Changing market dynamics”.
Class 5 Case study 2 Explain one of the approaches to solving social issues “Using market forces to create social value”.
Class 6 Lecture by guest speekers Explain one of the approaches to solving social issues “Advancing full citizenship”.
Class 7 Workshop: Presentation of problem finding and solution Explain one of the approaches to solving social issues “Cultivating empathy”.
Class 8 Problem finding Explain the diffusion of social innovations
Class 9 Solution and its social value Explain the concept, purpose, and practice of Community based inclusive development.
Class 10 Sustainable business model Explain the initiatives of social enterprise.
Class 11 Interim presentation and discussion Explain impact of social entrepreneurship.
Class 12 Hypothesis and testing Listen to the social entrepreneurs talk about his experience, and understand the reality of social entrepreneurship.
Class 13 Modification of model based on verification results Plan a social entrepreneurship story using three stages (innovator, entrepreneur, and diffusion) framework.
Class 14 Preparation for the final presentation Present a social entrepreneurship plan and evaluate from five viewpoints (New idea that changes the pattern in the field, Creativity, Entrepreneurial quality, Ethical fiber, and Social impact)
Class 15 Group presentations Understand the latest situation of social innovation in the world.
