In this course the instructor lectures on the fundamental properties of soil such as its compressive properties and shear properties. Additionally, the instructor will lecture on applying them to stability problems (slip circle failure, earth pressure), on the basis of shear properties.
Students will study the soil mechanics of consolidation and shear behaviors. They will
1) be able to explain the principle of effective stress.
2) be able to explain consolidation theory and influencing factors.
3) be able to explain soil failure criteria.
4) be able to explain shear behavior and influencing factors.
5) understand Critical State Theory which explains consolidation and shear behaviors.
