Course description and aims

This class provides the technical knowledge on design, fabrication and maintenance of structures made of steel, which are one of the most fundamental structural materials in civil engineering field . In this class, students will learn about the history of material developments, material characteristics of steels, design method considering material properties of steels, fabrication and inspection methods. In addition, the corrosion damage cases and the countermeasures against them will be explained.
This class is aiming to enhance students' fundamental technical ability to ensure the safety of infrastructures made by steels.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will:
1) Be able to explain the characteristics of steel materials.
2) Be able to explain the design methods of steel components considering the material characteristics.
3) Be able to explain the fabrication methods and inspections as well as connection methods.
4) Be able to explain the damage in steel structures and countermeasures against it, especially for corrosion damage,

Class flow

In this class, the lectures to provide the fundamental technical knowledge on the design, fabrication and maintenance of steel structures will be done. Students will have assignments/quizzes in the class to enhance the understanding.

Class 3 Design of tensile members Explain the design procedure of tensile members in steel structures.
Class 4 Design of compressive members Explain the design procedure of compressive members in steel structures.
Class 5 Design of bending members Explain the design procedure of bending members in steel structures.
Class 6 Fabrication and inspections Explain the method of fabrication and inspections of steel structures.
Class 7 Design of connections Explain the design methods of connections (joints) in steel structures.
Class 8 Corrosion damage and Corrosion protection Explain the features of corrosion damage and corrosion protection in steel structures.

Assessment criteria and methods

In this class, students' performance will be evaluated by assigments/quizzes (50%) and final examination (50%).
