This course consists of two experiments: (i) structural mechanics experiments and (ii) hydraulics experiments.
In the experiments on structural mechanics, through two different experiments, students will obtain a deeper understanding on mechanical properties of structural materials and on fundamental process of structural design, and will obtain the ability to solve the problems in the design and fabrication process. In the experiments on hydraulics, students will obtain a deeper understanding on fundamental principles regarding water flow which have been studied in lecture (Hydraulics I). The two different experiments were conducted, namely “water flow on the weir” and “water wave”.
In this class, students’ performance will be evaluated by three activities: (i) “interview prior to experiment” where students’ background knowledge on structural mechanics and hydraulics will be checked if they already have an sufficient knowledge to conduct the experiment, (ii) “experiment” where students’ attitude and leadership will be considered during the observation and measurement of various phenomena and (iii) “interview after the experiment” where students’ understanding on the experimental results and analysis will be evaluated.
【Structural mechanics experiments】
1) Measure, analyze, and discuss about the properties of structural steels.
2) Understand the fundamental process of structural design, and build bridge model independently.
【Hydraulics experiments】
1) Measure, analyze and discuss about the water flow on weir including characteristics of water pressure and velocity in the potential flow.
2) Measure, analyze and discuss about theory and characteristics of water wave including water height, velocity and orbital of water particles.
【Structural mechanics experiments】Material properties, steel, structural design, bridge
【Hydraulics experiments】Blade type weir, potential flow, flow net, water wave
✔ Specialist skills | Intercultural skills | Communication skills | ✔ Critical thinking skills | ✔ Practical and/or problem-solving skills |
Structural mechanics experiments and Hydraulics experiments are conducted in parallel.
【Structural mechanics experiments】 (i) interview prior to experiment, (ii) experiment and (iii) interview after the experiment will be conducted for each experiment.
【Hydraulics experiments】(i) interview prior to experiment, (ii) demonstration of experimental equipment and procedure, (iii) experiment and (iv) interview after the experiment will be conducted for each experiment.
