Course description and aims

This course focuses on the purpose, structure and methods of various spatial planning such as national land, regional, and urban planning. Students are expected to learn the history of national land and the current issues relating to land, followed by the history of cities. The current issues relating to contemporary urban planning are explained and basic knowledge on urban and regional planning are provided.
The aims of this course are to obtain the fundamental knowledge on national, regional and urban planning, and to be able to discuss current problems and future directions of cities and land use considering their history and socio-economic background.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1)understand basic terms relating to urban and regional planning;
2)understand the scale and overall picture of urban and regional planning;
3)understand the brief history of urban and regional planning; and
4)understand the basic issues faced by contemporary urban and regional planning.

Class flow

Planning theory and corresponding practices are explained in each class. Lectures (1st to 10th) will be given by Nakai, and lectures (11th to 15th) will be given by Asakura.
