Students are assigned advanced design problems with historical and cultural topics, and a focus on sustainability, and are asked to present solutions through research-based, analytical presentations, and proposal presentations using drawings and models. Students form multiple groups of about five, which collaborate on everything from research to the final presentation.
At each stage (research, conceptual design work, basic design work, preparation work for final presentation) of this course in design studio format, the instructor checks the students' esquisse. Joint workshops with overseas universities are envisioned, so the working language is English by default.
Students will have insights into the history of architecture not just from the perspective of architectural history, but also from consideration of the relationships with real urban spaces. The goal is also to learn a methodology for transmitting this to future generations from an architectural design perspective. Another goal is to take advantage of the group work aspect of the course to develop leadership, by developing individual creative power and ability to work in a group.
