Course description and aims

Kazuo SHINOHARA (1925-2006) was the former emeritus professor of Tokyo Tech. The Centennial Hall of Tokyo Tech was designed by him. He designed about 40 houses and he had classified his own works into four categories. In this course, you are going to learn from Kazuo Shinohara through analysis and design project.

In this course, you will analyze one of the styles under a category designed by Kazuo Shinohara at first. After analysis you will design one (or two) house (houses) in actual urban condition or a cottage area by extracting and developing Shinohara’s concept.

Student learning outcomes

Shinohara’s works are categorized into four styles by himself. You should select one of them to analyze spaces and theories of the style. You need to check up not only the style you analyze but the relationship with the other styles. Based on the analysis on Shinohara’s works, you should extract a key concept for design from Shinohara’s theory. Then in this house design stage, you should design detached house with a choice of urban condition site or cottage area site, or both.
