Course description and aims

This Design Studio is for students to learn about energy efficient and high performance building by using computational simulation software and sensors. This studio will focus especially on how to integrate daylighting into architectural design.

Student learning outcomes

Learning daylighting design and performance evaluation.

Keywords

Architectural Design, Energy Efficient, High Performance, Daylighting, Performance Evaluation

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

The first half of the course includes an introduction about how daylighting works, looking at a real building, and then the instructor lectures on how daylight can be brought in through a roof (toplighting), and then through a wall (side lighting), with specific reference to exhibit issues. Students will design a small exhibit gallery and we can review their designs.
The second half of the course focuses on evaluating design performance using either Diva or physical models. Direct sun and shading are checked first, then illumination levels. Students will model their design performance and make changes to improve the daylighting. We will review their designs and performance.
