Course description and aims

Cultural heritage conservation is one of the important factors to develop sustainable built environment.
Conserving Cultural heritage, including historic buildings, makes a significant contribution to build sustainable local communities which constitute sustainable built environments. The reasons are as follows:
1) Understanding cultural heritage helps communities to build a local identity and create a sense of belonging.
2) Appropriate tourism development using cultural heritage activates regional revitalization.
3) Maintaining lifestyles and local industries through conserving cultural heritage secures its regional cultural diversities.
In addition, respecting historic environments and using historic buildings with proper maintenance contributes to conserving the global environment.
At first, this course will focus on the fundamental ideas of the cultural heritage conservation. After that, through various case studies from Japan and abroad, we shall learn how the cultural heritage conservation contributes to build sustainable built environments. At the end of this course, students will understand how to focus on the issues in the specific areas and propose the solutions using the cultural heritage conservation methods.

Student learning outcomes

Through this course, students will be able to:
1) Understand the fundamental ideas of the cultural heritage conservation.
2) Understand the various methods and techniques to develop sustainable built environments using the cultural heritage conservation.
3) Focus on the issues in specific areas and propose solutions using the cultural heritage conservation methods.
