This course deals with the nature of city landscapes, and the components of non-residential cities necessary for gaining an understanding of and planning city landscapes. However, it will be more than just unidirectional explanations from the instructor. Forming a city landscape isn't the objective, but rather a tool for achieving a good city. If we work from the current situation of degenerating cities, it is necessary to rethink the nature of city landscapes. Through the instructor providing information, and interspersing appropriate discussions, students will learn to think on their own, exchange opinions with others, and think independently about the future nature of landscapes.
There are two goals for this course. The first is to acquire knowledge about the nature and meaning of city landscapes. The other is to acquire knowledge about phenomena that have an influence on city landscapes, other than the control of residential neighborhoods. Building on this knowledge, students will acquire the basic knowledge to think about landscapes, balancing the functionality of a city with its landscape.
Students will acquire the following skills from taking this course.
1) Learn knowledge on the nature of urban landscape, and be able to describe the meaning of urban landscape.
2) Learn knowledge about the elements of urban landscape other than the control of residential neighborhoods, and be able to explain the balance between function and landscape.
