Course description and aims

This course focuses on the practice of urban and community design.
At first, we focus on methods, skills, and representation of urban design in the late 20th century.
In the latter half of this course, we focus on the planning process, and communications of community design in practice.
Finally, we focus on some scenarios and solutions of community design.

Student learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1)Understand the urban scales and fields, visual presentation, simulation methods of urban design in practice.
2)Review and analize plans and projects of urban design in Japan.
3)Propose the solutions of community design in downtown district.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Assessment criteria and methods

1)Students will be assessed on their understanding of urban design and community design in practice, and their ability to apply them to solve problems.
2)Students' course scores are based on midterm reports(40%) and final reports(60%).
