In this course, energy based earthquake resistant design of building structure is introduced. In the energy based earthquake resistant design, earthquake external force is taken as energy input, and the resistance of the building is taken as energy dissipation capacity.
By the end of this course, students acquire these knowledge.
(1) In what manner can the energy input exerted by earthquakes be related to mechanical properties of structures.
(2)How is the total energy input distributed over parts of a structure? What are the main parameters governing damage distribution, and in what manner does variation of parameters influence damage distribution?
(3) What functional relation is found among the energy dissipation capacity of a structural frame, its material properties, structural performance of members and the geometry of the frame
