Course description and aims

This course focuses on the purpose, structure and methods of various spatial planning such as national land, regional, and urban planning. Students are expected to learn the history of national land and the current issues relating to land, followed by the history of cities.
The current issues relating to contemporary urban planning are explained and basic knowledge on urban and regional planning are provided.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1)understand basic terms relating to urban and regional planning;
2)understand the scale and overall picture of urban and regional planning;
3)understand the brief history of urban and regional planning; and
4)understand the basic issues faced by contemporary urban and regional planning.

Class flow

Planning theory and corresponding practices are explained in each class. Lectures (1st to 9th) will be given by Nakai, and lectures (10th to 14th) will be given by Soshiroda.

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
