Course description and aims

The goal of this course is for students to gain an understanding of the history of architecture built in the "West" since pre-historic times, with a focus on Europe, based on architectural styles and how they shifted. Specially, students will use the time divisions of common architectural styles to gain an overview of the architectural characteristics of each period's style, the zeitgeist, and historical significance, with the help of ample examples.
For students majoring in the field of architecture, the history of architecture is not just a required field of learning in which they acquire a basic grounding that spans all of architecture, but also an important academic field for cultivating a perspective on architecture and history that is essential for the future of constructing buildings and urban environments. Through this course, students will become acquainted with the characteristics of various types of man-made architecture, the circumstances of their creation, and the zeitgeists, as well as gaining a perspective of how people have conceived of architecture and cities throughout historical periods, and how the architectural culture and techniques of the Western world have formed, which are the basis of our modern architecture and cities. On that basis, we would like students to use this course as an opportunity for considering how future architecture and cities should be.

Student learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1)Acquire basic knowledge on characteristics of architectural styles seen in the history of western architecture, and explain them.
2)Understand the meaning of western architecture and its history as the matrix of architecture and urban environment which are surrounding us around the world today.
3)Acquire their own thinking way for seeking historical meanings of architecture and urban environment at present, based on knowledge acquired through lectures.
4)Cultivate their perspective on architecture and history by finding contemporary meanings in western historical architecture, based on knowledge acquired through lectures.

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
