Course description and aims

Students will get first-hand experience with basic characteristics of building environments, structure, and materials which cannot be experienced at their desk, as well as deepen their understanding of various theories and design methods.
For the building environment, as basic tests of sound, air, heat, and water, students will carry out noise measurement, wind speed distribution measurement, thermal distribution measurement, and water quality measurement. For the building structure, buckling experiments of steel member and truss structure, liquefaction tests, and vibration experiments are carried out.
For the building material, a sliding test of floors that utilizes the psychological reactions of building end users are carried out.

Student learning outcomes

I This course provides a method for how to obtain the fundamental performance in environmental engineering, structural engineering, and building materials. Additionally this course provides a technique for how to calibrate properties of the specimens.

Class flow

Students carry out experiments and measurements under the guidance of faculties and teaching assistants. Students have to submit reports of the experiments.
Students are divided into 4 groups in order to accomplish experiments.

Class 2 Noise measurement Measuring noise levels outside buildings using a sound-level meter.
Class 3 Measurement of airflow distribution in indoor Analyzing airflow distribution in indoor environment and measurement of air ventilation volume in a room.
Class 4 Measurement of temperature distribution Making a thermocouple and measurement distribution of temperature.
Class 5 Water quality measurement Learning the method for the water quality test and measurement of water, such as tap water.
Class 6 Soil liquefaction Evaluation of effective stress during soil liquefaction.
Class 7 Response of a two masses vibration system Evaluation of natural periods of a two mass structure based on shaking table tests.
Class 8 Response of a multi-mass vibration system Evaluation of natural periods of a multi mass structure based on microtremor measurements.
Class 9 Experimental test steel members, Preparation and tensile test Understand experimental procedures and tension test.
Class 10 Experimental test of steel members, Compression test Understand compression test and explain the buckling behavior of steel bars.
Class 11 Preparation of Experiment on Truss Structure Learn about the connection system and how to use the measurement instruments through assembly and strain-gauge attachment on truss beam and material test specimen.
Class 12 Tension Coupon Test of Steel Material and Quasi-static Loading Test of Truss Beam Understand the fracture mechanism of steel material and buckling of truss beam through the tensile coupon test and quasi-static test of truss beam.
Class 13 Slip resistance test against floor materials Studying the method for evaluating floor slipperiness considering human psychology.
Class 14 Supplementary experiments and summary of the classes Summarizes the experienced experiments, and perform additional experiments if necessary.
Class 15 Review of the reports Create a report on the experienced experiments, and perform critiques if necessary.

Assessment criteria and methods

Students' course scores are evaluated on the basis of the reports of experiments. Full attendance and completion of all experiments are basically compulsory.
