Course description and aims

This course focuses on building materials that are used for composing building elements and for functional purposes. First, lectures are delivered on the function and required performance of typical building elements such as roof, exterior wall, floor, interior wall, ceiling and opening. Second, this course explains types, basic characteristics, durability and workability of typical building materials and their composition that are used for building elements. Next, this course explains mechanism, rational usage method and key points in usage of typical functional materials such as coating materials, waterproof materials, fireproof materials, adhesive and sealing materials, heat insulating materials, sound absorbing and insulating materials. In addition, lectures on daily safety and livability performance evaluation methods of building elements are given.
In designing of architecture, appropriate selection of materials and their compositions is essential. The aim of this course is to provide necessary knowledge on finishing and functional materials and their compositions, for designing building elements which match well with users' demand.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Explain function and performance that are required for building elements such as roof, exterior wall, floor, partition elements and opening.
2) Explain types, basic characteristics, durability and workability of typical finishing materials and their compositions which are used for building elements.
3) Explain mechanism, rational usage methods and key points in usage of typical functional materials.
