Course description and aims

Description: This course looks at the relationship between human beings and the natural environment from the perspective of social engineering, and understands the entirety of it. Human beings have developed, maintained and transformed their interrelationship with natural environments through the society and space. In modern days, the systems of environments surrounding human beings are immensely complex, and academic disciplines are subdivided correspondingly. However, if we understand the relationship between human beings and the natural environment as a holistic system, the existing intelligence of different academic disciplines have to be examined comprehensively.
Aim: This is the first lecture in the Department of Architecture and Building Engineering that concerns social engineering. The teaching staff of social engineering provide lectures by organically combining their own research projects associated with human beings and environments. In so doing, the course aims to get students to learn the way of thinking described above.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Understand through specific examples the relationship between human beings and environments that appears in institutions and forms, and express that understanding in a report.
2) Understand through specific examples the relationship between human beings and environments that appears in planning and principle s, and express that understanding in a report.
3) Understand through specific examples the relationship between human beings and environments that appears in people and urban space, and express that understanding in a report.

Class flow

How each class will be conducted: Two teaching staff of social engineering provide a lecture by organically combining their own research projects associated with human beings and environments, and have a discussion between them and with students.
How the subject matter will be covered over the course of teaching: A summarising session is held every fourth week, where four teaching staff jointly provide a lecture in the form of panel discussion on the themes described in the “student leaning outcomes” section.
The method of teaching: It takes an omnibus style and provides a discussion between teaching staff and also with students in each lecture.

Assessment criteria and methods

Students are required to submit a report four times in total. Each report is marked out of 100 with 25 for the degree of understanding, 25 for the knowledge, 25 for the ability of structuring the report, and the final 25 for the ability of expressing the idea.
