Course description and aims

This course aims at learning the experimental principles and methods of physical chemistry and related knowledge that are required to carry out bachelor thesis research.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Conduct basic experiments required for bachelor thesis research.
2) Devise a troubleshooting method when the experiment fails.
3) Clearly note the purpose, results, and discussion of the experiment.

Keywords

Physical chemistry

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

The experiment will be conducted after explaining the experiment in about 30 minutes.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend a certain length of time outside of class on preparation and review (including for assignments), as specified by the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Undergraduate Learning (東京工業大学学修規程) and the Tokyo Institute of Technology Rules on Graduate Learning (東京工業大学大学院学修規程), for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Textbook(s)

Original text created by the the School of Life Science and Technology

Reference books, course materials, etc.

No reference book is specified.
Handouts will be distributed as needed.

Assessment criteria and methods

The grade is evaluated by the attitude toward the experiment, the degree of skill of the experiment operation technique, and the experiment report.
