Course description and aims

This course aims at learning principles and methods for basic experiments in physical chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular biology, which are required for conducting research in the laboratory.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Conduct basic biological experiments required for research in the laboratory.
2) Solve problems when in trouble with basic biological experiments.
3) Describe the aim, results, and discussion of biological experiments clearly.

Keywords

Physical chemistry, Organic chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular biology

Competencies that will be developed

Specialist skills Intercultural skills Communication skills Critical thinking skills Practical and/or problem-solving skills

Class flow

Students start experiments after the guidance on the flow of the experiments in the first ~30 min in each class.

Course schedule/Required learning

  Course schedule Required learning
Class 1 Students are divided to 4 classes, and take 1 of the 4 experiments; physical chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular biology (other 3 experiments will be taken in LST Basic Laboratory I, III, IV). For each experiment, students perform 4-5 projects. Experimental report.

Textbook(s)

An original textbook edited by the School of Life Science and Technology

Reference books, course materials, etc.

Handouts will be distributed as necessary.
